Book excerpt: In this report progress during the first six months of an effort to examine the role of elevated terrain in the initiation and development of mesoscale convective weather systems over the midwestern U.S. and eastern China is discussed. Major areas of activity presented include data acquisition, the development of a climatology of convective system occurrence, the identification of areas of frequent initial convective activity over the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains, and the presentation of several preliminary case studies. Also discussed in the initial evaluation of numerical modeling efforts to be made for case study analyses. (Author).
