Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Memorial of Crispus Attucks, Samuel Maverick, James Caldwell, Samuel Gray, and Patrick Carr, From the City of Boston That in the Granary Burial Ground, in Boston, rest the remains of Crispus Attucks, Samuel Gray, Jonas Caldwell, and Samuel Maverick, who, together with Patrick Carr, led by Crispus Attucks, were the first Martyrs in the cause of American Liberty, having been shot by the British soldiers on the night of the fifth of March, a.d. 1770, known as the Boston Massacre. Their names appear on the records and history of that time, but no stone marks their burial-place. We, therefore, respectfully request that a suitable monument may be erected to the memory Of these early patriots of the Revolution.
