Book excerpt: A reconnaissance-level cultural resource survey was conducted for the Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, in connection with the Mankato Flood Control Project. The area surveyed will be affected by proposed modification to the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad Bridge over the BLue Earth River just south of Mankato, Minnesota. The purpose of this survey was to determine if any cultural resources exist in the project area that might be affected by the proposed bridge modification. The survey included both a review of pertinent records and a field examination of the project area by means of surface reconnaissance and shovel testing. The records check revealed that only one recorded site is located in the general vicinity of the project area. However, this site should not be adversely affected by the proposed bridge modification. Field examination of the area indicates that it has been severely disturbed in the past by construction of a railroad right-of-way, an industrial plant, a city park and a residential district. Surface reconnaissance and shovel testing produced no evidence of disturbed or intact archeological resources in the area to be affected. The results of the survey indicate that no cultural resources will be affected, damaged or destroyed by the proposed bridge modification.
