Book excerpt: The Acid Rain National Early Warning System (ARNEWS) was established in 1984 to detect early signs of damage to Canadian forests and to monitor changes in forest vegetation and soils. In this document, the number of trees that died in 1995 is reported, in addition to the historical mortality rate for major species. The cause of tree mortality is also determined in the field, using nondestructive techniques, and when necessary supplemented by laboratory examination.
