Book excerpt: Excerpt from Census of Business, 1935: Retail Distribution, Preliminary United States Summary This preliminary summary of retail distribution in the United States in 1935 presents in convenient form the data contained in a series of preliminary State reports, published on various dates between August 13 and October 13, 1936. The statistics were gathered in 1966 by a field canvass of retailers in every State, city and county in the United States, with funds provided by the Works Progress Administration. Although the cooperation of retailers was voluntary, in the absence of legislation which in regular census periods makes reporting mandatory, only a few of those who reported for 1935 have refused to provide the necessary infor mation for 1955. Except for these few refusals, the Bureau received the full cooperation of retailers throughout the country. The figures herein are subject to correction and some additions, particularly in areas where field work continued after the closing date of the preliminary report. Additions will be reflected in the final series. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
