Book excerpt: Abstract: This study was conducted in order to investigate the frequency and experience of lost move syndrome (LMS) in competitive youth gymnasts (N = 109) from the New England area. This study also investigated the extent to which LMS was distinct from related conditions (i.e., slumping, choking, fear of injury, and sport performance phobias) Gymnasts and their coaches completed questionnaires inquiring about skills the gymnasts were unable to perform after previously being able to do so. The vast majority of gymnasts (81%) reported losing a skill, whereas the coaches identified only 37% of the gymnasts as having lost a skill. Related conditions could not be ruled out for all but two of the gymnasts who claimed to have lost a skill. The results of this study revealed that gymnasts and coaches did not distinguish LMS from related conditions.
