No attempt has therefore been made to touch - except in merest outline - upon the constitutional side of Canadian History. Rather has the writer, adopting a simple conversational style, tried to present the history of Canada in the form, as far as possible, of a series of biographies. At the same time, that the child may get some idea of the relation between cause and effect and become conscious of growth and development in the history of the country, effort has been made to present - not a series of isolated pictures - but a coherent whole, of which each chapter forms a necessary and definite part. Stress has been laid on the work of the explorers and on its value to the country. To induce the child to read with atlas at hand, care has been taken - even when the reference is brief - to state somewhat definitely the route of the early voyageurs. Though the book is elementary in form, original sources of information have been consulted whenever possible, the diaries and letters of the leading people referred to having been read wherever such were available.
