And she was an orphan who had to transcend a painful childhood in order to be a good mother to her child. As Dubois stated at the time, "One ever feels a two-ness. An American, A Negro...Two warring ideals in one dark body." Indeed Sarah Breedlove/Madam CJ Walker was an American and a Negro, as was her daughter - both of whom likely viewed herself through their own conflicting identities. What did they see?
