Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the percentage of students at Bemidji State University (BSU) participating in campus recreation and to investigate the perceived constraints by college students to participate in campus recreation activities on a regular basis. The sample was taken from fifteen ten o'clock in the morning fall 2004 classes at BSU that were selected randomly to participate voluntarily in this study. Within the fifteen classes 301 students successfully complete the questionnare dealing with participation in campus recreation activities. Of the sample of 301students, 129 (42.9%) students participated on a regular basis while 172 (57.1%) students did not. No significant differences were found for participation rates within different demographic categories, such as age, gender, education level, residency, major, and marital status. The number of children, however, did play a significant role on the participation rate of individuals. The more children an individual had, the less likely they were to participate in campus recreation activities. The strongest reasons given for not participating in recreation activities on campus were "lack of time because of school, work or family" (M = 2.10, SD = 1.78), "lack of time because of other leisure activities" (M = 3.04, SD = 2.05), and "lack of co-participants" (M = 3.16, SD = 1.84). (All results are given on a 4-point Likert scale). The results of this survey may help the staff of campus recreation departments understand what students are participating in campus recreation and if there is anything more they can do to increase the participation rates in campus recreation activities.
