Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speeches at the Bar and in the Senate When I undertook the task of editing them, I found the general impression, among persons well acquainted with his lordship's career, to be, that it would be impossible to procure reliable reports of any, but a very few, of his great orations. In two of the heat memoirs of him, that in Mr. D. Owen Madden's I related and its Rulers, and that which appeared after his lordship's decease, in the Times newspaper, it was positively asserted, that there were only two or three, that could at all be considered accurate; and that even the best report gave but a dull shadow of his extraordinary eloquence. I can well believe this to be the case. It is the concurrent testimony of the greatest cotemporary critics, and of his rivals as well as his colleagues. It is true too, that the ordinary reports of Hamard and the news papers - like all other reports, in the period before short-hand had been carried to a perfection equal to that of the photograph, are but slow and meagre transcripts. I take it, however, that there is ia trinsic evidence enough to show, that the majority of the speeches which I have printed in this volume, are authentic versions of the very words used by Plunket, on the most memorable occasions that he appeared in public; and that at lent a dozen of them fully sustain his Me. The only credit I claim for my share in the book is, that I have taken some pains in searching and collating, in order to verify, whatever reports I could depend upon, as exhibiting marks of his own revision; or if not, as being the fullest and most careful extant.
