I of England granted Walter Ralegh (Raleigh) in 1584, upon which Ralegh sent a reconnaissance expedition to what is now North Carolina. This was followed by a colony under the leadership of Ralph Lane, which established headquarters in Roanoke Island. Lane and his men spent nearly a year in the area. In the summer of 1587, Gov. John White and a colony of 115 men, women, and children settled there, and the first English child was born in America. When Gov.
