Book excerpt: Slurry Wall construction was used in the construction of a five-level underground parking structure adjacent to a settlement-sensitive historic building. The slurry wall minimized ground disturbances and maintained groundwater levels in the soil supporting the building. Employed for both temporary and permanent excavation support, the slurry wall was designed as the permanent perimeter foundation wall of the parking structure. Geotechnical instrumentation was installed to monitor ground movements during excavating operations and construction. Groundwater levels were also monitored to evaluate the performance of the wall in minimizing groundwater drawdown in critical areas. The instrumentation data confirmed that the wall performed as intended; it successfully supported the excavation and new building without disturbing the historic structure.
