The novel tells of Edgar Huntly, a young man who lives with his uncle and sisters on a small farm. Edgar is determined to learn who murdered his friend Waldegrave. When walking near the elm tree where Waldegrave was killed, Huntly sees Clithero, a servant from another farm, who is digging in the ground and weeping loudly. Huntly concludes that Clithero may be the murderer of his friend and follows him, soon discovering that he is sleep walking and hiding dark secrets.
