Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The programs of investigation were designed to enhance the understanding of the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with solids. In particular the electronic structure and the linear and nonlinear optical properties of semiconductors and metallic surfaces were studied. The former materials are used in modern solid state electronic circuitry for detection, amplification, and communication inaerospace environments. Research relating to metallic surfaces centered upon the photoemission phenomenon-a problem important for understanding the response of electronic components to high frequency radiation and also important for the design of high efficiency photoemitters. The study involved calculating the high frequency dielectric properties of semiconductors including electronic and ionic fluctuations, anisotropy effects, magnetic fields, impurities, and band structure using appropriate generalizations of the many body perturbation method.
