However, Japanese fruit interests are working to restrict imports through quotas and other protective government measures. Nevertheless, u;s. Prospects for an expanded fruit market in Japan are good. This outlook is tempered somewhat by the persistence of import controls. U.s. Fruit growers and shippers may face increasing competition in some export markets from canned fruit for which the Japanese industry is now actively seeking outlets. The United States is a market for certain Japanese canned fruit not produced in quantity in the United States. For example, the United States took about one third of Japan's exports of canned Mandarin (satsuma) oranges in 1962.
