Both men & women were centered in three separate endeavors, the acquisition of food, shelter, and personal safety of themselves and their families. The lives of Paleo, Woodland Archaic, and Late Woodland people were similar and yet different from each of the other two phases. The similarities of hunting were uniform across the three, shelter was a constant search, and safety was also a uniform issue. It is thru the actions that lend the technology to the task that was the defining factor in all three societies. As humans progress, they learn new skills and technologies to match the environment in each situation. Old ideas are replaced or modified, new technologies are refined and sometimes reinvented. A new perspective into what it meant to be "human" may be seen in the mortuary art & the means people dealt with their dead.
