Book excerpt: "Plutarch is a Platonist and Numenius a Platonically inclined neo-Pythagorean, and both are pleased to emphasize the failure of Antipater to respond to Academic critique. The Academic Cicero too bears witness to this aspect of Antipater's philosophical career. For Mnesarchus, see in particular I-6, I-17 to I-19.In addition to his attempt to reclaim Plato (see I-74) and to respond to Carneades' attacks, Antipater also considered the history of his own school in retrospect, recognizing that even before his time there had been philosophically significant disagreement within its walls. Significant differences in doctrine remained a characteristic feature of the school until its eventual demise. The need to respond to powerful criticism from Carneades made Antipater into an innovative figure in the history of the school.8 He also needs to be put in a larger context, which involves looking at what we know about the school's leading figures for some decades after his activity as well. We have some scattered information about the personnel of the school from the second century BCE to the first century CE, some of which will appear in the texts below. We are also fortunate to have a partial list of post-Chrysippean Stoics preserved in the 'index locupletior' of Diogenes Laërtius:9"--
