Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to determine 1984 motor carrier operating costs for each of the provincial and territorialregions in Canada (the Maritime provinces have been grouped asone). The nature of truck service causes operating costs to varysignificantly in relation to particular characteristicsassociated with each activity. Vehicle configuration, commoditycharacteristics, hauling distance, degree of utilization, regional area of operation, right-of-way conditions, and driverexpertise and attitude affect costs. This study attempts torelate operating costs to these factors, to producerepresentative information for a wide spectrum of motor carrieractivities.
