Book excerpt: It is no longer valid to consider ultrasonic testing frequencies in terms of numbers stamped on a transducer, switch positions on an instrument or bandwidths of amplifiers. anomalous behaviour of transducers and instrumentation, noticed during recent research programmes, was recognized as a frequency spectrum compatibility problem between the components of the testing system. frequency spectrum analysis has been applied to the solution of problems of spectral incompatibility between system components and also to the examination of the effects of test materials, grain size and defects. results have revealed that all have a considerable influence on the ultrasonic frequency spectrum. when the spectral compatibility of the testing instrumentation is correct and when the effects introduced by the test component are understood, considerable improvement in ultrasonic testing efficiency can be realized.
