Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Service of Information, United States Army It has long been the belief of the writer of these notes that the functions of certain branches of the service auxiliary to the line in the United States army are not in general well understood even by people who are interested in military affairs. The reasons for this are, no doubt, in part due to the fact that the functions of these auxiliaries are many and varied, and are not outlined in available form or even clearly defined except in the brief and general statements of laws, regulations, or orders affecting the service. This lack of knowledge seems to be especially true of the corps with which the writer has long had the honor to serve, the name of which gives no indication whatever of its functions, scope, and value to the army. It is thought, therefore, that an outline of the duties and field of usefulness of the signal corps of the army may be of value to those interested in military affairs, to others upon whom the army must depend for its maintenance, and to officers and men of the national guard who will be called upon to perform the duties of signalmen. To instructors and students at military schools, to officers of the regular army who may be called by detail or by accident of service to construct and maintain lines of information, and to the great mass of the volunteers if called to the defense of the country, these notes may also be of interest and use. For these reasons they have been prepared. The writer begs to acknowledge his indebtedness to Lieut. Col. Samuel Reber, Maj. Edgar Russel, Capts. Charles S. Wallace, George S. Gibbs, and G. Soulard Turner, of the signal corps, and Mr. William M. Reading, of the signal office, for their assistance in the preparation of these notes.
