Given the likelihood of war due to regional tensions, the collection sought to provide its contemporaries with a cultural and historical context. It features writings from French and British "travellers of note." The Balkan Peninsula as a whole is described geographically and demographically, and then the writers covered particular topics for each nation. Turkey/Ottoman Empire gets several historical essays, domestic and international political analysis, and cultural essays describing Constantinople, Turkish women, bazaars, and Ramadan and other religious customs. Macedonia, Albania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Montenegro, Herzegovina, and Romania all have at least two essays describing the nation as a whole and its history. Major cities and the differences between rural and urban life are also touched upon for some. A number of high quality photographs are scattered throughout the text.
