Book excerpt: Take a journey to the old West-Richard Fletcher's Two Rode West is a rowdy and exciting adventure set against the backdrop of the Oregon trail. Two young men, after fighting in the Civil War, have a desire to visit the west. They begin a journey from St. Louis with a wagon train lead by Bull, an uneducated cowboy that has a keen sense of how to survive in the wilderness. With the help of his Indian partner, Tokchaw, Bull and the young men embark on the adventure of their lives. Problems abound from the beginning-one of the men is accused of murder. He falls in love with a young woman and marries her. Meanwhile the group is determined to make it to Oregon-and they do-then travel to California and finally, Wyoming. They buy a ranch, but their troubles aren't over yet-a tragedy occurs. Will the two young men realize their dream? Can they conquer the wilderness and survive the rough journey? Fletcher's novel is a nostalgic narration where the characters are richly textured and the reader is drawn into a simpler time-when land was abundant and hard work eventually led to a place one could call home.
