It is the demonstrated and proven strategic reach of the U.S. military in supporting diplomatic engagement, protecting global economic presence, and fighting and winning our nation's wars that maintains the superpower status of the United States today. But, as developing nations attempt to define their role in the new balance of world power, and as ethnic, religious, and tribal conflicts continue to flare, the United States, as a world leader, must now, more than ever, remain engaged in regional "small wars" and peace operations to promote democratic stability, enhance economic development, protect U.S. interests, and prevent major regional conflict.
