Book excerpt: Crew workload, crew situational awareness, usability characteristics of the crew station controls, displays, and subsystem interface, and simulator sickness were assessed during the RAM-66 Comanche Force Development Test and Experimentation I (FDTE I). Pilots who participated in FDTE I reported that they typically experienced moderate levels of workload and situational awareness during missions. They noted several problems with usability of the controls, displays, and subsystem interface, which should be resolved. Pilots experienced very mild to moderate simulator sickness symptoms during missions. The discomfort they felt did not significantly affect their performance. A panel of subject matter experts observed each mission and reported that the pilots typically experienced moderate levels of workload and low to moderate levels of situational awareness during missions.
