Book excerpt: The factory style development of the shale plays for oil and gas and the United States have provided a massive financial windfall for many people and companies across the country. These developments have occurred on a massive scale and created problems that are just now beginning to emerge that were never before seen in the oilfield. Earthquakes are occurring in places that have not had earthquakes in decades or centuries and pollutants that once were present in small quantities are now being produced at very high levels.Murphy's Law says that if something can happen it eventually will happen if we roll the dice enough times. If you toss a coin enough times you will eventually get it to land on its side. The conventional oilfield occasionally had major disasters, Macando and Valdez come to mind, but we are now drilling thousands of wells where we once drilled hundreds.Every technical event in this story has already happened. Obviously, in the telling of this tale, I have created fictional characters but these events are real and when they happen at the same time in the same place it is going to cause a lot of damage. The corollary to Murphy's Law is that Murphy was an optimist.
