"Gaslighting" is a term known in the counseling fields. Unfortunately gaslighting happens in relationships often without intention to harm another. For example, a child notices that their parent is upset about something. When the child asks the parent about this the parent tells the child that nothing is wrong. As a result, the response from the parent doesn't match what the child feels to be true. The child then questions their own perceptions. A better response from the parent would be to acknowledge the truth that they are upset and that it is okay to have upset feelings from time to time without going into the details of why. While it is important for children to listen to their parents and teachers, it is equally important to encourage the child to listen to their own inner guidance.
