Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dependent and Delinquent Children in Georgia: A Study of the Prevalence and Treatment of Child Dependency and Delinquency in Thirty Counties, With Special Reference to Legal Protection Needed The Georgia Children's Code Commission was created in 19221 wit-h instruction to study the existing laws of Georgia which in any way affect child life, to study conditions of child welfare In the State, to study the laws of other States, and to consult authorities in this and other States, and to draft for presentation to the succeed ing legislatures such laws or amendments to the existing laws as will better safeguard. The welfare of children in this State. The law provided for 10 members Of the commission to be appointed by the governor to hold office for five years and until their successors were appointed. No appiopriation was made for the work of the comn'nssion, and it was specifically provided In the law that members were. Iiot to be paid any salary or remuneration by the State. The. Commission was organized early In 1923 with the following commit tees (1) Delinquency and juvenile courts, (2) dependent, neglected, and defective children, (3) child health and recreation, and (4) education and employment. The georgia State Council of Social Agencies loaned the services of their executive secretary to the commission.
