Book excerpt: Discusses the aim of this study is to develop an algorithm for the detection, localisation and estimation of background leakage flow in water distribution networks. In order to achieve this aim, the specific objectives of this study are to: Formulate the hydraulic model of water distribution networks using graph theory; Formulate a background leakage model; integrate the background leakage model formulation into the water distribution network hydraulic model and solved using Newton-based methodology; using the integrated hydraulic model in step 3, develop an algorithm for selecting critical pipes and for indicating possible location for pressure control elements; programme the formulated algorithm in MATLAB software environment; and validate the developed algorithm on water supply distribution networks data.
