Book excerpt: This publication report on a joint Institute of Radiation Hygiene, Federal Health Office (Germany) and World Health Organization workshop held in Neuherberg, Germany from 9 to 13 October 1996. It describes the principal interventional procedures and their applications, and examines the associated risks. Measures for reducing exposure of patients and staff are emphasised throughout. The importance of adequate and continual training of staff at all levels is stressed. Guidance on equipment specifications is also provided, underlining the need for a balance between clinical efficiency and reduction of radiation exposure.
