Book excerpt: Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday as introduced to the New World by the French, which resulted in carnival events that originated in Mobile that spread to New Orleans and today existing in many cities throughout the United States. The first Mardi Gras occurrence in Eureka Springs was in 1907 with a parade, and that was contributed to by later celebrations such as Masquerade balls. With Katrina, came Dan Ellis and Al Hooks who each contributed to the creation of what has become a ten-day Mardi Gras carnival which is spread over four weeks, that is called Eureka Gras Mardi Gras Extravaganza as produced by the Krewe of Krazo (ozarK spelled backwards). The Sponsors The impetus to this success has been from the Sponsors who in a grand way have not only supported, but also through funding, have enabled an invigorating event to start off the New Year with its annual Kings Day Kick-Off. The Royal Court A major contributing factor to the merriment and spirit of Eureka Gras is The Royal Court, which during each year, includes leading community members who obligate their time and resources in promoting a fun-fest event. The Roi Regency Past Kings and Queens are honored by their ongoing participation. When beckoned, they appear in Royal Regalia and assist in continuing the traditions of a New Orleans style Mardi Gras. The Corps du Cavalier The infrastructure that maintains the heritage of Eureka Gras are those members who have pledged to annually support the Eureka Gras events by their attendance in addition to monetary funding of the Coronation Ball and the Hookers and Jokers Masquerade Ball.
