Book excerpt: Exploring Information Sharing Utilized Among Law Enforcement Personnel Despite the lack of research in this area, one of the best ways to develop patterns, raise clearance rates, and solve crimes efficiently is for departments to share information within and between one another. This study is intended to explore what methods of information sharing are utilized in Connecticut and the perceptions of sworn and civilian law enforcement personnel about the strengths and weaknesses of information sharing methods. Additionally, the perceived strengths and flaws of information sharing may generate potential policy implications for local municipal police departments. Results from an anonymous online survey to law enforcement personnel, showed that in general, information sharing is perceived as helpful, easy, and necessary, but could be done more often and more efficiently. In addition, participants reported their opinion on how to improve communication both within their department and with other agencies. Future research and limitations are discussed and include identifying steps towards generating a unified information sharing system in Connecticut.
