Book excerpt: Current research applications of a computerized method for instantaneous and continuous measurements of expired nitrogen are presented. Projects already completed, now in progress and being implemented include: (1) evaluation of intrapulmonary gas distribution in patients with various types of pulmonary disease; (2) definition and classification of nitrogen washout patterns in patients with various types of cardiac disease; (3) study of intrapulmonary distribution of respired gas and pulmonary mechanics during induced pulmonary vascular congestion in the rabbit; (4) investigation of pulmonary mechanics and washout patterns in the rabbit following papain destruction of the lung's parenchymal meshwork; (5) delineation of changes in washout patterns during ventilation with varying tidal volume, respiratory frequency and inspiratory flow rates; (6) definition of newborn infants' nitrogen washout patterns and lung volumes; the defects of intrapulmonary gas distribution encountered in the respiratory distress syndrome of the newborn; and (7) longitudinal study of washout characteristics in a group of patients with chronic bronchitis with particular reference to development of chronic obstructive emphysema.
