Each entry is devoted to an American writer, with non-fiction writers included. The "contextual" focus is achieved through the organization of the entries, which situates the works of each writer into biographical, historical, literary, and critical contexts, and includes a list of the significant historical figures active at the same time. Each entry includes an inset box with an essay on some aspect of the author's work or life that highlights their "common human experience". The bibliography that concludes each entry contains a list of web sites and periodical articles; the author's major works are listed in the context of the entry and as part of the initial summary stating where and when the author was born.
