Book excerpt: "Heller Drive provides access from the campus's west entrance on Empire Grade to several residential colleges on the west side of campus and to the academic facilities on the central campus. Currently, bicyclists traveling on the Heller Drive must share the road with the vehicles. Because the road has a substantial grade and, in some locations, narrow shoulders, some stretches are difficult for bicyclists to negotiate, particularly in the uphill direction ... The objectives of the proposed project is to improve bicycle access to and within the campus, to reduce conflicts between vehicles and bicyclists, and to increase the safety of bicyclists. The Heller Drive project is consistent with the planning principles of the 2005 long-range development plan (2005 LRDP), which include discouraging automobile use to and on the campus, in part through development of new bike routes to encourage bike travel around the campus. The 2005 LRDP specifically envisions Class II bike lanes on major roads through the campus, including Heller Drive"--p. 13, Project need and objectives.
