Book excerpt: Excerpt from Implementation of the Notch Technique as an Rf Peak Pulse Power Standard A low power notched CW signal (zero to 10 mw) is delivered to the primary input port of coupler B and is thus added to the existing pulsed signal. The notch is generated by means of a fast diode switch modulator which is gated to turn off the CW for a short time interval each time an rf pulse is generated. The duration of the notch is adjusted to be slightly greater than the pulse duration. A sample of the composite signal, which includes the pulse and the notched cw, is coupled to the sidearm of coupler M, detected with a crystal diode, and then viewed on an oscilloscope. By use of adjustable time delays, the pulse can be precisely positioned within the notch of the CW signal as shown in figure 2.
