Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to provide an overview of how to read a photographic work, especially portrait photography. The purpose of reading in this book is an attempt to understand the interaction between photographers, technical aspects, identity, and socio-cultural aspects that surround the process of creating portrait photos, so as to make them meaningful. The assumption developed here is that these aspects are interrelated so that they affect the final form of a work. Kassian Céphas and Indra Leonardi, were chosen as the two photography figures whose works are reviewed in this book because they have very different backgrounds. It is intended so that readers get information-rich descriptions while opening up opportunities for readers to make independent comparisons.
