Book excerpt: I arrived in England in October 1918. I had been away six years, as a civilian in Burma and latterly as an officer on the Palestine front. The First World War was not yet over; thirteen more days of frantic battle were to pass before the armistice. I was on three weeks' leave and by November 19 would be due to return overseas. That my stay was to be so brief, that after six years in eastern solitudes I should have only a tantalizing glimpse of western life, was a frightening prospect. I felt like an escaped prisoner, who knoes that he has no chance of evading recapture, and for whom every instant of liberty is precious time to be savoured to the full. -- Pg. 9.
