Because she, herself, was the "Marie" of the story, she could bring both realism & fancy to the narrative of a young girl who so loved a wooden horse named "Eagle" that she turned to it for comfort when stricken with sorrow, as when Father injured his leg, or when he tried to replace Eagle with a shiny, new steel horse. By her pleas she kept Eagle from being destroyed, & ironically, her own life was later saved by him, as will be seen in the closing chapters.
