Book excerpt: My project is a mixed-use building in the Third Ward, one of the most rapidly developing sections of uptown Charlotte, North Carolina. The program includes office and residential components over ground level retail. It is directly adjacent to two of the most significant developments on the horizon for the Third Ward, namely a new baseball park for the minor-league class AAA Charlotte Knights and an urban city park. These projects have spurred or encouraged other large-scale developments in the area, yet site at the corner, across the street from these coming attractions, is vacant. The purpose of my design is to contribute a mix of uses that will complement the park and ballpark and bring people to, and keep them in, Third Ward throughout the day, not just on game days but all year. In connection with the mixed-use mid-rise tower, an area master plan was created to integrate the neighborhood with the parks and plan the surrounding district for appropriate development.
