Book excerpt: This report presents a survey of national and international markets to determine the availability of existing products for the development of an airborne multi-sensor day/night all-weather surveillance system. The sensors to be identified are a forward-looking infrared imager (FLIR), an ALBEDOS type active sensor, a laser rangefinder, and a charge coupled device (CCD) camera. The report provides a technical description of each type of sensor, along with associated theory, and then describes sensor requirements for four surveillance scenarios: identification of an automobile licence plate at 1 kilometre distance, identification of a ship at 2 kilometres, and detection of a person in water wearing a survival suit with retroreflective strips at 4 kilometres. Costs for an assembled multi-sensor system are also estimated. The appendix contains technical literature on various commercially available sensors.
