Book excerpt: Herein, a novel approach is reported of the synthesis of substituted indole derivatives that utilizes a lithiation reaction of a substituted JV-alkyl benzyl aniline to yield a dilithio intermediate, which is then trapped with an ester. The reaction sequence utilizes an internal cyclization and a subsequent dehydration, to generate a substituted indole.
