Members of the family immigrated to northern Ireland in the early 1600s. By the early 1800s members of the family had immigrated to America. James McConnell (b. 1757) was born in Dromore, Ireland and married Margaret Topping. They were the parents of seven children. Their children immigrated to America where they settled in Ohio, West Virginia and other parts of the United States where they married into a number of families including Bell, Christy, Freshwater, Manypenny and Croye.
