Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preparation and Properties of Pure Iron Alloys, Vol. 4: Determination of the Critical Ranges of Pure Iron-Carbon Alloys by the Thermoelectric Method Characteristic curves showing the changes in the thermoelectric properties of pure iron-carbon alloys are given for temperatures up to C. The A, transformation was found to be constant at 768° C. For heating and cooling in all alloys having a carbon con tent up to per cent carbon, but it did not appear in alloys of a higher carbon concentration. The characteristics of the curves obtained indicate that the A, transformation is of a different nature from the A, and A, transformations. The temperatures for the A, A, and A, transformations are in fair agreement with those obtained by other methods. The upper end of the transformation is sharp; this is not the case when it is determined by other methods.
