Book excerpt: On February 14 - 16, 1984, a workshop was held to continue the dialogue between the public and private sectors begun in January 1983 at the Building Energy Research Workshop (Carmel Workshop) in Carmel, Calif. The cosponsors of the first workshop (the House Committee on Science and Technology, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Electric Power Research Institute, the Gas Research Institute, the National Association of Home Builders Research Foundation, the American Institute of Architects, and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers) agreed that it was now appropriate to revisit the topics of building energy research direction and priorities, resulting in the Building Energy Research Workshop II. They formulated an agenda that provided for examination of the potential for improving building energy efficiency, review of current and planned activities in solar and conservation buildings research, and discussion of priorities within the context of a comprehensive research and development program.
