Ray Mears led the Vols to unprecedented heights in the 1960s and 1970s, winning 278 games. His star-system approach resulted in nine of his players, including Ernie Grunfeld and Bernard King, being named All-Americans. When illness forced him to end his coaching career in 1978, Mears was the all-time winningest active coach in the nation.
