Sample Book Insights: #1 I’ve worked in and around philanthropy for 30 years, and I’ve learned that most of what is counted as philanthropic in the United States comes from small gifts that are made by not-rich people. #2 I conducted more than thirty mapping conversations with more than three hundred people from all walks of life in 2019. These conversations were designed to encourage people to reflect on how they give. #3 There is a large body of literature about the wealthy and high net worth individuals’ giving behaviors. However, little is written about how middle class and lower class people give. #4 The Urban Institute conducted a research study on charitable giving, and in 2018, they released an infographic that showed the different ways people give. It revealed a much more dynamic and inclusive picture of giving than the typically separate counts of charitable donations, political contributions, investment choices, and consumer behavior.
