It is not intended to treat systematically of the relations which are borne by Manufacturing Industry to Natural Productions, to Mechanical and Chemical Science, to the Fine Arts, to Commercial and International Tariffs, or to Social and Co-operative Arrangements. Nor is it intended to describe in technical form the processes and the localities of our great departments of manufacture. The author of this volume gave a popular view of those processes and localities, in a series of "Supplements" to the Penny Magazine, in the years 1841-2-3-4; the substance of which was afterwards embodied in six small volumes, under the title of British Manufactures. The title 'Curiosities of Industry' will pretty clearly explain itself. Many processes are curious without being novel; many are both novel and curious; many reveal to us the store of strange and valuable things which science presents to those who know how to apply it in aid of industry; many arise out of the discovery of new materials; and many more by new applications of old materials. Of all such are these 'Curiosities' composed. Each paper or essay being complete in itself, they may be arranged in any order at pleasure. In this volume they are placed in the order of publication.
