It is not our purpose, in adding this leaf, to enter into exhaustive details, and dwell at great length upon the hundreds and thousands of sad but interesting incidents in connection therewith, but to present, in a brief and comprehensive form, an account of The Great Flood that rendered desolate, for the time being, the beautiful Ohio Valley, extending from Pittsburgh to Cairo. It is a calamity, the like of which no living man ever saw before in this Valley or that of the Mississippi. Nor is there any well defined tradition handed down by the aborigines of any such occurrence during the ages the country must have been occupied by them. The widespread ruin it has wrought it will take years to repair, and thousands will never be able to resurrect their industries nor recuperate their fallen fortunes. We trust that it may not be the fate of the inhabitants of this Valley to ever again be compelled to cope with such a combination of circumstances as produced it. During the preceding month of January we experienced the severest and most intense cold of the century. There were several heavy snow storms extending over a vast extent of territory, embracing New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio.
