The type of processing depends largely on the individual starting material. It is most strongly influenced by the presence of lanthanides, especially lanthanum itself, which are difficult to separate from the americium. The separation procedures used on five different starting materials are described, and the efficiency of some separation methods is discussed in view of personal experience.
