The hedgerows were golden, and the willows that drooped over the silent river. Everything was agreeable to the Master of Gray--the sunlight, the west wind, the chatter of birds. Moreover, he was flourishing as the green bay tree. In the winter Angus and Mar and Hamilton had come quietly to their own--not without profit to their dear friend, the Master of Gray. The King was safe in Maitland's hands, and happy with horses and dogs, numerous beyond his dreams. The King was pledged to Elizabeth, by word and oath--which were little enough--by Maitland's assurance that to help his mother to freedom was to lose his own throne--which was much. The Master of Gray perceived with enthusiasm that he had done brave work for this cause, chosen in good time. He foresaw with satisfaction praise from those whose praise he most valued. "And, faith, I deserve it," he said to himself, and laughed his musical laugh. He, Patrick Gray, had arisen, and the enemies of Elizabeth were scattered. Even Lady Kinaldie--for a moment he found himself wondering what had happened to her in this new diaspora. After all, she was the most beautiful woman that he had seen--save one. Then in an aesthetic spirit he began to consider the question, and he brought up before his eyes the slight curves of that lithe figure, the grey eyes dark as a mountain lake, the russet hair, and the cheeks daintily tinted.
